About Truth or Consequences:

Truth or Consequences is a quirky, off-the-beaten path town located in Southern New Mexico. For hundreds of years people have been coming to soak in the magical healing waters, and slow down to the speed of the Turtle, which is the name of the mountain that sits above this high desert community. The beautiful Rio Grande runs right along the edge of town. From the days of the Native American warring tribes who put down their weapons to soak in the hot waters to the mining days of the early 20th century, Truth or Consequences has long attracted healers and those needing a respite from regular life. The healing waters have no sulfur smell, a perfect pH of 7, and 38 different minerals – including a large amount of chloride, a naturally occurring germ killer that sterilizes the skin and ensures the purity of the water.

The town got its name from the 1950’s game show hosted by Ralph Edwards. The show held a contest awarding any town in America that changed its name to Truth or Consequences an annual parade with Hollywood stars. Thus Hot Springs, NM became Truth or Consequences (“T or C” as the locals call it).  You can read more about the town’s history and hot springs mineral content here.

Most of the retreat will take place at the Mothership Yoga Lounge, a studio founded by Shayna and Glenn Turner in 2003. The adobe building was originally a church in the 1930’s and has since been transformed into an incredible 1,600 square-foot yoga studio with restored original Oak floors.

Where to Stay while on your retreat:

We have reserved all of Firewater Lodge– a wonderful local hotel that includes soaking in the natural hot springs. It is only a few blocks away from the Mothership Yoga Lounge, so it will be very easy to walk. Please call or text our friend Richard to reserve at 575-740-0315. Make sure to mention you are with Shayna & Shanti’s women’s retreat and receive a 10% discount!

We also recommend a very nice and inexpensive lodge one block from the Mothership Yoga Studio called La Paloma Hot Springs and Spa.

Traveling to T or C:

Truth or Consequences is located exactly two hours from either Albuquerque (to the North) or El Paso (to the south) – directly off of I-25. Both airports are easy to fly into, often with inexpensive flights on Southwest, if you reserve far enough in advance.  We will set up a Facebook group for retreat participants so that you can coordinate on shared rental cars, if you’d like.

If you’re coming from Boulder, It’s about an 8.5-hour drive with no traffic, straight down I-25. Or you can veer off of I-25 and drive through Taos, which is more scenic and only adds about 45 minutes total. (If you take this route, Taos is about half way, so if you have an extra night to break up the trip, that is a great option!)

Once you get to town, you will literally not have to get in your car at all.  There is easy walking to the yoga studio, downtown shops, a grocery store, art galleries, restaurants, and more.

Meals while on your retreat:

The retreat includes snacks throughout the weekend and dinner together on Saturday night at the Mothership, catered by the local Asian fusion restaurant, Lattitude 33. We will have plenty of vegetarian, gluten-free and dairy-free options. Please let us know if you have other dietary restrictions. There are plenty of restaurant options for meals within a very short walking distance.  We will provide these details upon registration.

“The Stirring the Shakti retreat transformed me in so many ways. The most profound for me was leaning into a circle of women.  I made so many friends and felt so seen. Thank you Shanti.”

“I learned so much about myself while gaining experience on how I can apply simple practices in my life to continue my journey. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.”

“The Mothership Yoga Lounge is a perfect New Mexico location and studio for any yoga retreat or workshop. Its beautiful wood-floor studio, with a decor where east meets southwest with a bit of alien flavor, creates an otherworldly atmosphere which I have found to be delightful for yoga practices. Shayna and Glenn are a joy to work with, easeful and accommodating, and students have loved both the space and the close proximity to lodging and hot springs.” – Bea Doyle, Dynamic Yoga Therapeutics

“Year after year I look forward to gathering with you and the women in the circle. Each year I have insights and aha moments that have changed my life. I’ve also made some amazing friends through the Stirring the Shakti gathering.”

“This was my first year joining you at the gathering for women. To be honest, I was hesitant at first because I had not attended a twelve hour event with women before. I found myself with more and more energy as the day went on and wishing it wasn’t ending after the full day! This was a life changing experience and the food was delicious. Thank you again and again! I will be sure to see you next year! ”
